Patient Education: Definitions

This guide will highlight the different resources available to patients.

Patient vs. Consumer

Consumer - someone who purchases, uses, conducts research for a particular product or service. Basically, everyone is or will be a consumer of health information and or a health system.Consumers make choices.

Patient - someone who is under the care of a medical professional. Consumers may or may not be patients.

  • The most important task to do, either as a consumer or patient, is to ask questions and communicate with healthcare providers. No question is stupid or unimportant.
