Scholarly Writing & Citing: About

How to write scholarly papers in AMA, APA, and NLM styles.

What Is Scholarly Writing?

Scholarly writing is a writing style focused on the clear and direct communication of research and cited evidence. It is the voice which researchers use to communicate their research to the academic audience.

Several different style guides exist that aim to make it easier for scholars to communicate with one another. The style guide you choose to follow will be based on a number of factors - personal preference, submission guidelines, class requirements, etc. Three of the more popular style guides used in the medical field will be explored here - APA (American Psychological Association), AMA (American Medical Association), and NLM (National Library of Medicine).
