Citation Management Tools: Cite with Word Online

To get the EndNote21 Cite While Your Write tool for Word Online:

Open Word Online

Click File Menu > Get Add-ins > More Add-ins

Search for EndNote and click Add

Click Continue

Once loaded, the tool can be found on the References tab.

Important: For customers to log into CWYW in Word Online, they must have an EndNote 21 web account.

From Word online ribbon:  References tab  |  EndNote

Apply credentials and authentication if presented.

The Cite While You Write pane with two tabs-- My references and Manage citations-- opens on right.

• Place cursor inside document where you want to insert citation(s).
• Check citation(s)    |  Insert Citation button at bottom

To add Bibliography (to new document)

! Be sure cursor is at end of text/document !

Update Citations button at the bottom of the references pane

To make changes to citation(s):

• Add author to existing citation
    My References:  select existing citation | check a new citation  |  Update Citation  --or--
   
• Remove a single author citation
  My References:  Select citation | Remove citation button at bottom | Remove Citation? message - Remove  --or--
  Manage citations: Manage citations pane |  pencil (edit citation) |  Remove citation button --or-- uncheck | Remove
   
• Remove author from multiple author citation
  My References: uncheck author to remove (drill to locate) |  update citations  --or--
  Manage citations: Manage citations pane |  pencil (edit citation) | uncheck citation (checked will remain)  | Remove citation
  Manage citations: Manage citations pane |  pencil (edit citation) | expand Citation editor  |  Ellipses (3 dots) | Remove
   
• Change output style
  Ellipses (3 dots)  |  Citation style arrow | select new style from list --or-- Select another style | Apply Style
   
• Refresh EndNote  Cite (when new citations are added to EndNote library)
  Ellipses (3 dots)  |  Sync EndNote Library

Note: When you see the Update Citations or Update Citations and Bibliography buttons, there are unsaved changes that are missing.  Click either to update.

To get the Mendeley Cite While Your Write tool for Word Online:

Open Word Online

Click File Menu > Get Add-ins > More Add-ins

Search for Mendeley and click Add

Click Continue

Mendeley Cite While You Write for Word Online add-in panel will automatically open next to your document in a References tab

Once loaded, the tool can be found on the References tab.

The tool can also be downloaded from Mendeley.com  Citation Plug-in

• Place cursor inside document where you want to insert citation
• Check citation(s) |  Insert citation button at bottom

To add Bibliography (to new document)

Ellipses (3 dots)  |  Insert Bibliography 

To make changes to citation(s): select citation to edit.

• Add author to existing citation
  select existing citation |  check new citation  |  Save changes
   
• Remove a single citation
    select existing citation |  click X bottom of Mendeley Cite pane  |  Save changes
   
• Remove author from multiple author citation
  select existing citation |  click X at end of citation to remove  |  Save changes
   
• Change output style
  Citation Settings pane  | Change citation style | select new style --or-- Search for another style  | Update citation style
   
• Refresh Mendeley Cite (when new citations added to Mendeley library)
  Ellipses (3 dots)  |  Update from Library
